Fortunella obovata Fukushu is a naturally small tree with a spreading habit that makes it an attractive ornamental shrub. The leaves are broader and fruit larger than other kumquat species. At 1 1/2 inches long, the oval fruit boasts thin, sweet, edible rind with tart, acidic flesh and few seeds. It's an especially hardy variety that can withstand temperatures as low as 28°F without protection. When planted in the ground, Fukushu will reach 6-10 feet tall, shorter as a container plant. Its summer blossoms are exquisitely fragrant with fruit ripening in winter.
