Highly aromatic Passiflora edulis, commonly known as passion fruit or granadilla, is praised as the “King of juice” for its yellow pulpy juice full of black seeds in a red or purple rind. It is a perennial vine of the Passifloraceae family. Taiwanese call it “Clock Fruit” for its clock-like purple flower with white fringe.
“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” passion fruit gets its name from both its appearance and marketing appeal. The pulp and seeds inside can look like sparkling stars, and the fruit often has a bright golden-yellow color that emphasizes its premium, dessert-quality image. It’s essentially a high-end, sweeter selection of Taiwan passion fruit, prized for its strong fragrance and rich flavor. Compared to regular varieties like Tainung No. 1, the “Twinkle” type is typically sweeter, less acidic, and more aromatic, with a floral, honey-like taste that some describe as resembling tropical candy.
The passion fruit's rich aroma and unique sweet-and-sour flavor are among the reasons for its immense popularity. Owing to the rise in people's living standards, they are now more discriminate in their taste for food. Among beverages, natural fruit juice is the best-liked, and of these, the passion fruit is a standout. It also is rich in Vitamin A, which, specialists point out, can enhance one's resistance to respiratory ailments and the health of one's skin. In addition, it contains Vitamin C, which can help prevent colds, scurvy and other illnesses.
